However, the paper found that the institution still needs to improve the quality and capacity of its infrastructure and human resources on ground so that it can compete with key players in other countries of the world like Open University United Kingdom, Open University Malaysia among others and therefore recommends adequate funding of the institution by the government. From the result gotten it was found that NOUN has greatly increased the number of graduates in Nigeria, and it has provided education that is apt to the needs of the economy as regards human capital development for economic growth for example, nursing, lifelong learning, vocational and entrepreneurial courses. This paper uses descriptive analyses, employing secondary data from existing literature to compare ODL in Nigeria with what is obtainable in other parts of the world, with the aim of addressing the efforts made by ODL in this case National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN) which is the first and for now the only unimode ODL tertiary institution in Nigeria, in providing education fit for economic growth of the nation and it also addresses the areas it is lagging behind. Education is seen as the key to economic development, as it is through education that humans can acquire the skills and knowledge needed to effectively utilize the scarce resources at their disposal.
